Azerbaijan and Lithuania have reached an agreement to even more expand bilateral cooperation in railway sector, spokesperson for Azerbaijan Railways Nadir Azmammadov reported.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between the head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov and Lithuania’s ambassador to Azerbaijan Valdas Lastauskas in Baku.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects for future cooperation between Azerbaijan and Lithuania on ‘Viking’ railway project as well.
“Lithuania’s ambassador praised the large-scale reforms held by Azerbaijan Railways”, Azmammadov said.
The combined transport train ‘Viking’ started running on Ilyichevsk (Ukraine) – Minsk (Belarus) – Draugyste (Lithuania) route with the total length of 1,766 kilometers in 2003. The project participants are Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia. Later, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey joined the project.
Ukraine and Lithuania signed a memorandum in February on accession of the container train ‘Viking’ to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route from Europe to China through Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
Azerbaijan signed a protocol in May on participation of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC in the ‘Viking’ international container train. (Trend/Business World Magazine)
