The first batch of Ukrainian food aid in 2026 has arrived in the Republic of Malawi as part of the humanitarian initiative of the President of Ukraine “Food from Ukraine”. In total, 5,350 tons of food are planned to be delivered – yellow split peas and vegetable oil. The aid is intended to support about 600 thousand people suffering from food insecurity.
As of September 3, 1,576.3 tons of food have already been delivered to Malawi. The rest of the cargo is expected in the coming weeks.
“Even in conditions of full-scale war, Ukraine remains a reliable partner in ensuring global food security. Russia is trying to destroy it by striking Ukrainian ports, agricultural and food infrastructure. We respond in the opposite way – we continue to produce food, export it and help countries and people who need it most. It is important for us that Ukrainian products today help support hundreds of thousands of people in Malawi,” said the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky.
The delivery was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Government of the Republic of Korea. The humanitarian operation is being implemented in cooperation with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Malawi.
WFP, together with the Malawi Department of Emergency Management, will ensure the reception, storage and distribution of food among the most vulnerable categories of the population.
Ukrainian aid arrives on the eve of the period of the most acute food shortage in Malawi, which traditionally lasts from October to March. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released in August, more than 1.9 million people in the country are already at the crisis level of food insecurity. It is expected that during the food shortage season this number may increase to 2.6 million people.
Taras Vysotsky expressed gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Korea for its financial support for the humanitarian operation and to the UN World Food Programme for its partnership in its implementation. (Agrarian Ministry)
