NNEGC Energoatom and Korean Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. have agreed to cooperate in the design, construction and commissioning of new nuclear power units in Ukraine.
The relevant agreements were signed in the presence of Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine Kim Hyung Tae by Acting Chairman of the Board of Energoatom Petro Kotin and Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Hyundai Engineering and Construction Hwang Joon-Ha. The document, in particular, provides for the assistance of Korean partners in the development of production facilities for the localization of equipment production in Ukraine.
German Galushchenko noted that the agreements reached were important in the process of construction of new power units at Khmelnytsky NPP, in particular, using the AR1000 technology.
“It is important that together with the Korean side we sign this memorandum during the war and move forward without waiting for its end. I believe that together we will build an energy sector in Ukraine that will meet the best international standards,” the Minister emphasized.
German Galushchenko also thanked the Republic of Korea for the assistance provided to the Ukrainian energy sector since the beginning of the full-scale war with russia – 10 cargoes of humanitarian aid, including 20 backup power plants and mini-excavators. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine Kim Hyung Tae emphasized that the Korean side was outraged by the recent russian attacks that caused huge damage to the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to him, the Government of the Republic of Korea is working to help the Ukrainian energy sector, particularly Kharkiv. At the end of last year, 60 diesel generators were transferred to Ukraine, and another 200 are planned for this year.
Korea will also increase support for the Ukrainian energy sector through international organizations.
Kim Hyung Tae noted that the signing of the memorandum between Energoatom and Hyundai would promote the development of Ukrainian-Korean cooperation in the nuclear industry, including the exchange of experience in nuclear technologies.
“South Korea has a developed nuclear power industry and expertise in the nuclear industry. NNEGC Energoatom and Ukraine as a whole are interested in developing our cooperation with Hyundai, which is one of the world leaders in this market,” said Petro Kotin.
The memorandum of cooperation between the companies was developed in accordance with the agreements set forth in the letter of intent signed during the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris at the end of November 2023. The cooperation is important for the start of construction of nuclear power units at KhNPP, two of which are based on the modern American AP1000 technology. The new units will replace the capacity of the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. (Government portal)
