An overall number of 164,734 crossings by people and 49,661 crossings by transport means were recorded in the direction of exit from Moldova and entrance in Romania at the Leuseni-Albita border crossing point during April 15 – May 15. Data to this effect was made public on May 16, one month after the launch of the coordinated border control at the Leuseni-Albita checkpoint. The authorities said that the waiting time at the border was shortened.
According to the Interior Ministry (MAI), one month following the launch of the coordinated control at the Leuseni-Albita border crossing point, “one of the principal benefits for passengers and freight transport is confirmed – the shortening of the waiting time at the border”.
According to the quoted source, since the starting of the coordinated control at the Moldovan-Romanian border, the best performance registered by the authorities implied an interaction of 15 seconds of the person authorized to cross the state border with one of the control authorities. Thus, for the moment, the maximal capacity of carrying out the border control by all the four control authorities from the Leuseni-Albita crossing point is an average of one person per one minute.
“Many of the benefits are still not felt by people, but will be seen soon. The single desk and the One Stop principle have been already implemented jointly by the Border Police and Customs Service. At the same time, the authorities continue to improve the working procedures and protocols within the coordinated control at the Leuseni-Albita border checkpoint, so that the joint control can be enforced when crossing the Moldovan-Romanian border in the near future. Also, more border crossing points between Moldova and Romania are scheduled to be opened, in order to enhance the mobility of the citizens and for a quicker access the EU area, including through the improvement of the border infrastructure through the construction of bridges across the Prut River,” reads a press release issued by MAI.
