Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has called on the European Union to return to discussions about sending a military peacekeeping mission to protect the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which is currently held by Russian forces.
“We have never been so close to a nuclear disaster, as we are now. Just regretting the situation may not be enough,” Landsbergis told reporters on August 30 his arrival in Prague for an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“We should go back to the discussion we had almost six months ago, perhaps even about a military peacekeeping force to ensure nuclear safety at and around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” he added.
The nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been held by Russian forces since early March.
The recent intensification of fighting around the plant has raised fears of another nuclear meltdown in Europe, similar to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. (LRT/Business World Magazine)
