In a go-kart accident, a man broke his neck and became paralyzed. This research was published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.
The researchers used neurosurgery to implant two grids of electrodes into the patient’s cerebral cortex. These electrodes will capture neurons in his brain as they fire, and researchers will decode his thoughts and intentions using algorithms. In this way, the system takes advantage of brain activity to interact with electronics. Johnson was able to operate a computer cursor, control a robotic arm, utilize Photoshop, play shoot-em-up video games, and drive a virtual car.
Johnson is one of perhaps 35 individuals who have had a BCI implanted in their brain. Bringing BCI to market will turn a purpose-built technology into a product that can be mass-produced, implanted, and used on a broad scale, significantly improving people’s daily lives.
