The unemployment rate in Georgia increased by 2.5% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period of last year, amounting to 19.5%, the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) reported.
In urban areas, the unemployment rate grew by 1.9%, while in rural areas it increased by 3.5%.
The economic activity rate, or the percentage of the country’s population that is able and willing to work regardless of labor status, has increased by 2.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, and totals 52.8% of the working-age population (population aged 15 and older).
“The labor force participation rate (economic activity rate) in urban settlements increased by 2.2%, while in rural settlements it increased by 2.8%,” Geostat reports.
The employment rate in the country increased by 0.7% and totaled 42.5%. In urban areas, it grew by 0.8%, while in rural areas the employment rate grew by 0.7%.
Traditionally, the unemployment rate is higher among men than women, Geostat says.
“In the third quarter, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, this indicator increased for women by 2.1%, while it increased by 2.9% for men,” reported Geostat.
However, the economic activity rate is higher for men than for women.
The economic activity rate in the reporting period for women amounted to 42.4%, while for men it reached 64.7%. The labor force participation rate increased both for women and men by 2.2% and 2.8% YoY. (Agenda/Business World Magazine)
