The number of green energy contracts concluded by customers with the state-owned Estonian energy group Eesti Energia tripled during 2017, hitting 10,045 by year-end.
Households with a green energy contract consume energy generated 100% from renewable sources, Eesti Energia says.
“By buying green energy, our clients are influencing the development of electricity production, with a view to better preserving our environment and using our existing natural resources more purposefully,” Jaak Jogi, chief of electricity sales for Estonia at Eesti Energia, said. “Eesti Energia’s strategic goal is to produce 40% of electricity from renewable and alternative sources by 2021. The more green energy clients we have, the bigger the share of renewable energy in electricity production will be.”
Eesti Energia uses 100% renewable sources of energy, water, wind, sun, household waste, biogas, and biomass, to produce energy sold to clients with these contracts. Businesses with a green energy contract with Eesti Energia can use a corresponding label on their products and in their marketing.
As of early January almost 500 corporate customers of Eesti Energia had such contracts.
Eesti Energia also points out that 60% of the customers with a green energy contract are women, and younger people make up a greater than usual share of customers in this segment as well. (ERR/Business World Magazine)
