For the second consecutive season Bulgaria looses ground in corn market. While Ukraine, Russia and Romania increase corn production, Bulgarian farmers might have decided not to enter this competition.
Firstly, after last season’s bad experience Bulgarian grain producers reduced corn planted area for the 2016 crop by 9.5% to the level of previous years, partially expanding wheat acreage.
Secondly, dry weather conditions during corn pollination period significantly reduced its productivity potential in this country. Analysts estimate that corn production in Bulgaria will be 7% lower than last year and the lowest over the past four seasons. (UkrAgroConsult/Business World Magazine)
