The temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has once again lost external power after the Ferosplavna overhead transmission line, which connected the plant to Ukraine’s unified power grid, was disconnected. As a result, the station switched to power supplied by diesel generators.
Energoatom reported this on Telegram.
“The Ferrosplavna overhead transmission line, which connected the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP with the Unified Energy System of Ukraine, was disconnected at 16:46. As a result of the loss of external power supply, the Zaporizhzhia NPP switched to diesel generators to meet its own operational needs,” the company said.
Energoatom stressed that every loss of external power posed a threat to nuclear and radiation safety. Reliable electricity supply is critically important for the safe operation of the plant and for the systems that provide cooling for nuclear fuel.
The company noted that the situation at the plant remained extremely dangerous due to Russia’s occupation of the facility.
“The only way to guarantee the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP is its swift return to the full control of Ukraine and its sole legitimate operator, JSC Energoatom, which is capable of ensuring the plant’s safe and stable operation in accordance with international nuclear safety standards,” the statement said.
