Russians are buying less butter after its sharp price increase. In January-September 2025, sales of the product in physical terms fell by 12% year-on-year, to 210,400 tons, but in monetary terms they rose by 17%, to 216.8 billion rubles. This follows from the data of the analytical company NTech, which cites “Vedomosti”. In “Magnit”, they reported a decrease in sales both in physical and monetary terms, but did not give specific figures.
Consumers have started to save money and either completely refuse to buy butter, or buy it in smaller quantities, says the director of the National Union of Milk Producers (“Soyuzmoloko”) Artem Belov. According to Rosstat, the average retail price of butter in January-September 2025 was 1,213 rubles per 1 kg. A year earlier, the figure was at the level of 927 rubles. Thus, over the year, butter has risen in price by almost a third. However, in packs of 180 g, the increase was less – about 22% (from an average of 177 to 217 rubles).
According to Rosstat data, over the cumulative period of 2022-25, butter has risen in price in retail by 57% (The Moscow Times).
