On May 12, Latvian Saeima passed in the second and final reading urgent amendments to the Law on Assistance to Ukrainian Civilians. Amendments are intended to provide aid to persons in Latvia who voluntarily provide accommodation to Ukrainian refugees.
It is planned to provide private persons with the right to receive benefits to compensate additional expenses that surface as a result of housing Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. The proposed amount is EUR 100 a month for every one persons and an additional EUR 50 for every next one, but no more than EUR 300 a month for a single refugee.
To receive this benefit, the host or their authorized person are required to submit a request to their local municipal administration within 14 days of the moment they started housing Ukrainian refugees.
The benefit will be paid for a period no longer than 90 days. The period will be registered in starting with the date mentioned in the request, but no earlier than May 1.
The law will come to force on the next day after promulgation. (BNN/Business World Magazine)
