The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the procedure for using state budget funds for the public investment project “New Construction of a Dual-Purpose Structure (with Radiation Protection Shelter Properties) for 200 People” on the territory of the Khortytsia National Reserve in Zaporizhzhia. The document was prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.
The new building will serve a dual function:
– In peacetime, it will act as a modern storage facility for over 100,000 museum artifacts;
– In times of danger, it will serve as a reliable radiation protection shelter for visitors and reserve staff.
Acting Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Tetiana Berezhna stated: “During wartime, protecting cultural heritage is a state priority. Therefore, we are creating conditions for culture to thrive amid the greatest challenges. This is not only about preserving museum artifacts and our historical memory during war but also about protecting people. Khortytsia deserves modern solutions that combine culture, safety and sustainable development.”
For the first time in the reserve’s history, a protective structure of this level will be built. The project will enhance safety for Zaporizhzhia’s residents and visitors. It will ensure the preservation of a unique museum collection even under the most challenging conditions. Moreover, it aligns with sustainable development goals and principles of accessibility.
The project’s implementation will be another step towards strengthening Ukraine’s cultural, social and defensive resilience. (Government portal)
