The Polish labour market will be able to absorb the huge influx of Ukrainian refugees, the central bank president has said.
Over 2 million people had crossed into Poland from Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, but Adam Glapinski said the Polish economy was strong enough to employ the majority of the Ukrainians.
“We do not have any central macro imbalances,” he said. “Everything in our economy is balanced out and in very good condition. The economy is growing rapidly, dynamically, with an amazing labour market that is still able to absorb one million or even two million workers.”
“We can handle this burden, even greater ones as well – the refugees and the military effort and everything else,” he continued.
Poland can achieve this, he added, despite “not receiving a single euro from the European Union” to help the country cope with the refugee crisis.
Despite this, he said that there were expectations that “the entire EU and the West would make a mighty effort to help us with this.” (The First News/Business World Magazine)
