The Zaporizhzhia NPP is under threat of complete blackout after the loss of the main power supply line. The International Atomic Energy Agency is negotiating with Ukraine and Russia on a local ceasefire to carry out urgent repairs. This was reported by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Since March 24, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has been powered only through the 330 kV reserve line “Ferrosplavna-1”. The main 750 kV line “Dniprovska” has been disconnected.
During this period, the plant recorded three cases of complete loss of external power supply. The IAEA said it was currently negotiating a temporary local ceasefire to allow repairs to be carried out and to reduce risks to nuclear safety.
The agency’s team at the ZNPP also received information about drone attacks near the plant and in Energodar, where most of the facility’s staff lived. According to available data, up to 40 drones were used in one of the attacks.
Recently, a drone carrying explosives has allegedly crashed near the engine room of the first power unit. According to the plant, there was no explosion, and no injuries or damage were recorded.
However, the IAEA team was unable to independently confirm the incident. The plant reported it only two days later, and the drone debris had already been removed by then.
“The presence of drones and explosives at a nuclear power plant is unacceptable, as it dramatically increases the already significant risks to nuclear safety,” Grossi said. (Minprom)
