Lithuania’s state-owned energy group Ignitis starts offering a world-first online service where residents can rent a part of a wind turbine. Until now, residents were only able to rent or acquire remote solar parks, Ignitis said in a press release.
Around 1,000 private customers will be able to rent up to 5 kW of the wind turbine capacity from the wind farm in Lithuania’s Mazeikiai region to cover their electricity needs.
According to Ignitis CEO Darius Maikstenas, renting a wind turbine could become one of the solutions to withstand the energy crisis.
“We are constantly looking for opportunities to engage customers to enter the energy market and start contributing towards its development rather than remaining observers,” he was quoted as saying in the press release.
A 4.5 MW wind turbine operating in the wind farm developed by Ignitis Renewables will be available for rent, meaning that anyone will be able to rent a part of the turbine and use its generated electricity. The residents will pay a rental fee, which is expected to be around 36 EUR/kW per month.
Ignitis estimates that customers who rent a part of a turbine will start generating electricity in the second half of 2023. (LRT/Business World Magazine)
